The Department for Communities (DfC) in Northern Ireland has added a public consultation to consider regulatory changes in the current system. It assumed that the consultation will run until February 21, 2020. DfC permanent secretary Tracy Meharg confirmed that the department is considering changes that could be included in any new gambling legislation. She further described the industry as an important employer in the territory and said that the current legislation is outdated and needs advanced industry and technological changes. "The results will put the department in a position to offer the best advice to an incoming minister on the future regulatory framework,”.

Tracy Meharg added:
“However it is very important to recognise that for some people, gambling has the potential to cause considerable harm. Any future changes to the law must balance the interests of the gambling industry with the need for regulation to protect vulnerable people,”.
